Mnemonic games

Focus and Concentration - By Dr. Laura De Giorgio

When I was about 13 - 14 years old, I got my first book on mind-power. It began with a simple statement "Focused energy always hits the target" and this statement remained with me for the rest of my life. It continued with this brief explanation: whatever you desire to create requires certain amount of energy. When you fill the image you desire with the energy it needs to manifest, it becomes part of your visible, tangible experience. So beautifully simple and true.

Focused energy is like a laser beam. You can burn holes with it. You can alter the outer reality in noticeable ways very rapidly, even instantly. Dispersed, diffused energy, has no such power. The entire purpose of getting into a state of hypnosis is to help you to generate and focus all of your energy and direct it like a laser beam toward the changes you desire so that you can have them rapidly.

The more focused your mind is on the goal you desire to achieve, the faster you can have it. The more you practice using your mind in a focused way, able to completely focus and concentrate upon the desired change as if it is real for you now - the greater skill and power will you develop. When you are fully focused upon something, it means that only the idea upon which you are focusing exists in your awareness at such time to the exclusion of everything else. When you are fully focused upon an idea, that idea is your entire universe, that idea is the only thing that exists for you, the only thing that is real for you, while you are focusing upon it.

You do not ponder what happened yesterday or what will happen tomorrow, you do not ponder what will you eat next, you do not ponder whether it`s working or it`s not working - you are totally and fully focused on experiencing the reality of your outcome now, savoring it and enjoying it with every cell and atom of your being, with every last bit of your energy invested in it to the point that it IS your entire world, your entire reality now, and it IS the most important thing for you, the only important thing for you - or else you`re just wasting your time.

There are people who believe that they suffer from "attention deficit disorder" and there are parents who stuff their children with Ritalin and similar medications, because they are convinced that they are unable to focus and concentrate. The problem is not in their ability to focus and concentrate but in lack of interest in the topics they are supposed to be concentrating, and in the way that the information is presented.

If you let a kid play his favorite game - he`ll have no problem getting wholeheartedly into it, becoming fully focused, concentrated and immersed in what he enjoys. Nor will he have any problem focusing and concentrating, if he is watching his favorite TV show or a movie that captures his imagination. If your child has no problem fully enjoying and being immersed in his favorite activities, he has no problem with focus and concentration.

And the same goes for adults - their favorite "game" usually revolving around sex ? they have no problem fully focusing on the experience, surrendering to it and enjoying it to the fullest.

What all the favorite "games" and experiences we like to indulge in have in common is - we enjoy them and when we enjoy something we find it easy to focus and concentrate.

If you are learning something and it bores you to death, it won`t be easy to focus and concentrate upon it. Dead and boring things are not inspiring. You can instantly improve your ability to focus and concentrate if you bring some life to that which you are focusing and concentrating about; finding something in it that excites you, that stirs the passion within you.

If there`s nothing in the topic upon which you need to focus and concentrate upon that elicits feelings of excitement and passion within you, then bring into it elements from other parts of your life that you are passionate about - bring into it your favorite people, characters, activities and incorporate them. In other words, bring life into that which you desire to focus upon.

Do you know what kind of people are the best "hypnotic subjects"? Those who have the most developed imagination. They can take anything and bring it to life, in vivid colors, in their inner experience. As they read about something, they are already reliving it within as if it were real for them now, they are reliving it in their emotions. So, if you`ve ever encountered a book (and there are few such books on the market) that say - you`ll be hypnotized as you read this book - this is true of any book that captures your imagination as long as you`re willing to go on a ride with the author of the book and enjoy the experience.

Little black words on white paper - especially when they deal with something you feel forced to learn and have no particular interest in, for the sake of passing some test - may be so boring to go through and the worst part is that the more it bores you, the more times you`ll have to go through it over and over and over again, so that you can retain something of what you`ve read to at least get the passing grade - turning the entire experience into veritable torture. And what a relief to know that you can go through the book only once if you bring in your favorite cast of characters and make it wildly interesting and unique - and then you`ll also have more time for other fun things you`d rather do in your life.

Sexual experience is one area of life where everyone is using his or her mind-power correctly. If you have had no other experience that demonstrates to you the power of focus and concentration, the power of your mind over your body - you can count on sexual experience. It is enough just to have a sexually enticing thought to stimulate the flow of energy, blood and hormones and create real, noticeable changes in the physical body - practically instantly.

Creating any other changes in your body or in your life, using mind-power is based on exactly the same principle. Your imagination stirs the energy and channels it into the idea your mind is focused upon.

Another important lesson from sexual experience is that you allow it to happen. You don`t sit and wonder can I or can I not - you let the changes in your body take place. You hold onto the image on your mind and then observe the wondrous, pleasurable changes happening in your body.

Just imagine if you could enjoy the same pleasurable experiences whenever you need to focus and concentrate upon anything you need to focus. You can. All you need to do is bring all the pleasurable sensations associated with the idea of the changes you desire and let them play out in your inner world.

During sexual arousal there is a natural build up of energy, which culminates in the release of this energy. Everything that is manifested in the physical world, with the use of mind power follows exactly the same process. After you charge your "mental idea" with the energy, you let go, you release, unleash all the built-up passionate energy and let it manifest.

Sexual act is not the only way to arouse, generate and unleash this passionate energy - but for a good number of people that`s the only reference they have to feeling fully alive and enjoying themselves and their experience of life - and that`s the main reason I`m mentioning it. Some may have had experiences of this passionate arousal of energy, feeling of great joy, through music, through dancing, through any other form of creative expression, through meditation and union with divine.

If you?re thoughts are wondering to other games you?d rather be playing, while you need to focus on one topic, incorporate that playful activity into the topic you need to focus upon. If you?d rather be watching a movie than studying, well, imagine that your favorite actors are enacting for you in your imagination that which you need to focus upon. You can turn the things you need to memorize into rhyme and song with rhythmic beat, add some funny and humorous elements to that which seems boring, dance it out (whoever said that you have to sit still and motionless to focus and concentrate ? go ahead and engage your body in the experience if you feel restless), create drawing or use other fun objects, or just imagine them ? whatever works for you best at a time, whatever helps you to bring some life, passion and excitement into that which you need to focus and concentrate upon. If you are attending long and boring lecture, oh, you can imagine your instructor doing something funny, being dressed in some inter esting costume, something that may bring even few giggles to your face or as if the words are coming from some of your favorite movie characters. Just because someone who is giving a teaching doesn?t necessarily know how to deliver it in a way that interests you, doesn?t mean that you can?t fully engage your imagination and make the entire event a memorable and fun experience for you. If you bring live and fun and enjoyment to whatever it is you need to focus and concentrate upon, you?re bound to experience immediate improvement in your ability to focus and concentrate

WINNING: DEFINING IT. ACHIEVING IT - By Chris Widener

If you ask most people whether they would like to be considered a winner or a loser in life, they would most assuredly reply that they would like to be a winner. But this begs the question, "What does it mean to win at life?" In some things it`s easy to define a clear winner. In a basketball game, whoever has the most points at the end of the game is the winner. In a game of hearts, my favorite card game, whoever has the least amount of points when one of the players reaches 100 points, is the winner.

But it isn`t quite as easy to decide what it means to win in the game of life, is it? And that is because people define winning in different ways. For many, winning is through the accumulation of money or material possessions. "He`s a success, a real winner," they say. Others think winning means living the longest. Still others say that it is to have their body in tip-top shape. Some say it is to have a happy family. Some say it is to regularly enjoy their hobbies.

All of these are fine, in and of themselves. But

I would like to encourage us to think about winning or success in a different way. Generally, people think of winning as the over-achievement in a particular, chosen area. I like to believe, however, that to truly win at life is not to overachieve in one area but to succeed in maintaining balanced achievement in numerous areas.

Let me repeat that: To truly win, to be a success, is not to overachieve in one area, but to maintain balanced achievement in all areas of our lives.

For instance, is a person of success if they earn millions of dollars but lose their family? Is a person a success if they garner national fame but have no friends? Of course not. In fact, they may live the most pitiful of all lives.

First, Define

So the first thing we must do is define what we will consider "winning in life." As you ponder this for yourself, I would like to recommend that you focus in on three overarching areas: Body, Soul, and Spirit.

The body is that which has actual connection with the physical world and would encompass physical health, financial health, family, work, and relationships.

How is your health? How are your finances? Are your relationships, both with your family and others all that they could be? Is work fulfilling? How would you define winning in these areas?

The next area, the soul, is that which deals with the emotions, will, and intellect. It is our thoughts, ideas, and attitudes.

How are you emotionally? Are you able to exercise your will? Are you growing intellectually? Have you done an attitude check lately? How would you define winning in these areas?

And the spirit is the part of us that transcends this life, the part of us that communes with God. Zig Ziglar said, "Money will buy me a house, but not a home, a bed, but not a good night`s sleep." So true. Inner peace comes from something much deeper.

Have you thought about going back to your spiritual roots? Are you able to spend time in quiet, solitude, and prayer from time to time? This is an extremely important area and all too often neglected. What would you like to achieve in this area? How would you define winning in these areas?

As we experience balance in these areas, we will find ourselves much more at peace with ourselves than if we were to experience tremendous success in one area but loss or failure in the other areas. We were designed to work as congruent, balanced people. This is how we get to the end of our lives and say, "I won."

Second, Prioritize

Once you have defined what it is that you would like to achieve in each of these areas, you have to prioritize them, and let other, non-important areas drop off the chart. Commit to developing a plan to succeed in a balance of areas. Exercise your will. Choose. Dwight D. Eisenhower said that "The history of free men is written not by chance, but by choice - their choice."

When we manage our time and schedule, we are simply making choices in regard to our priorities. For most, their priority is to take action on whatever is screaming the loudest at the moment. For those who become winners, they reflect on what they desire to achieve, make a plan and decide to eliminate the rest.

Last, Do it

Okay, you have defined winning. You have prioritized your life. Now, the hard part: Doing it. This is where we are all alone. We all make this step on our own, but having a written plan is as good a preparation as you can get. Rather than saying that you are going to do this for the rest of your life, take the next week to implement your new balance of winning. If a week sounds too long, just focus on today. Spend some time, be it ever so small, enhancing your life in these areas. Exercise a little. Read for a while to challenge your mind. Deal with your emotions. Spend time in silent contemplation to renew your spirit. Give some time to your spouse and children. Will Rogers said, "Even if you`re on the right track, you won`t get anywhere if you`re standing still." There has got to be action.

As we do this over time, and balance our lives out, we will begin to finally feel like we are winning at life. That will be exciting, as will the process!
