Johnny MnemonicDirected by Robert Longo; written by William Gibson; produced by Don Carmody; released by TriStar. Johnny Mnemonic, a $26-million science-fiction movie released last spring, would not have elicited any special attention from the art world had it not been directed by the artist Robert Longo. This was the first feature film for Longo, who made a name for himself in the 1980s with his drawings of stylishly contorted downtowners and his imposing mixed-medium combines. He made a short movie called Arena Brains (1987), as well as a number of videos for rock groups such as R.E.M., New Order and Megadeth. Remarkably, Johnny Mnemonic almost entirely lacks any of the high-end artistic or philosophical pretension you might have expected. Mainly an action movie, it targets the Beavises and Buttheads of the world. But, as even the most mindless Hollywood products tend to do, it does intimate deeper meanings. Like the darkly prophetic fiction of the esteemed sci-fi scribe William Gibson, upon whose short story and screenplay the movie was based, it tells a cautionary tale about the costs of reckless modernization. Set in a dystopic near-future, Johnny Mnemonic presents a hectic day in the life of a high-tech courrer, played by Keanu Reeves, whose "wet-wired" implants enable him to upload computerized information into his own brain. At the beginning, Johnny--who, dressed in a dark suit, white shirt and tie, looks as if he had stepped out of one of Longo`s famous drawings--takes on a bigger consignment than he`s equipped to handle, which threatens death by "synaptic leakage" if he doesn`t download within 24 hours. What`s worse, the code required to trigger downloading has been destroyed. Then he finds out he`s carrying the cure for NAS--Nerve Attenuation Syndrome--a fatal neurological disease spreading epidemically throughout the world, and an assassin hired by Pharmakom, the evil conglomerate from which the cure was stolen, is after his head and its contents--literally. Woven into the action is a story of one man`s quest for spiritual and moral redemption. Johnny`s deepest problem is that in order to make room in his head for the enormous amount of data he must carry he has had to dump a lot of long-term personal memory. In effect, he has traded his soul for professional rewards. As the movie opens, Johnny wants his missing parts back. But to finance removal of the implants and restoration of his memory he needs more money. One more job, his reptilian agent Ralfi assures him, and he`ll have enough to pay for the operation. Now that he`s carrying the cure, Johnny assumes an unwanted responsibility for the lives of millions. Without the downloading code, however, getting the cure out is almost impossible. A NAS Underground doctor tells him that the data can be surgically extracted but that the operation would probably leave him brain-damaged. Thus Johnny faces a choice of whether to save his own skin or sacrifice his life for the good of the world and thereby save his soul.
